Re: 1974 IH 200

I dont think this motor has ever been washed... 1 gallon of oil eater, 1/2 gallon of simple green and a pressure washer!

I'm going to see if the local rental place has a steam cleaner, throw the old girl on the trailer and run it down there.

Any of this help any of you IH guys ID the motor? Its got a Holly carb on it of some kind... Looks like some kind of adapter plate on the manifold to make it work.

Re: 1974 IH 200

Here's a pic of where the engine is stamped with the CID and SN (not always).
Image

The available IH SV8 engines... 304,345 & 392 CI

I strongly suggest getting a copy of the trucks Line Setting Ticket,which is the spec sheet for IH trucks as they were built.
Here's an example;

Here's a link with a basic explanation of LST's and what the codes are for;
http://ih.wargenstahm.se/LST/LST.html

http://ih.wargenstahm.se/LST/Intro.html

I posted more info here;
viewtopic.php?f=18&t=3240

Here's how to obtain a copy;
viewtopic.php?f=20&t=1374&p=8229&hilit=line+setting+ticket#p8229

There's a slim chance an original is still in the truck,it would be on the back side of the glove compartment,to open push the clip on each side "in" to release and it will flip fully open. LST's located there are about 3"x8" and may be hard to read. Better to get a full size (8x11) printed copy from the WHS.

Here's something that should prove very useful.
CTS-2306 Service Manual;
https://archive.org/search.php?query=su ... TS-2306%22

It's in 6 parts and can be downloaded free.

Here's a link for the MT-136 IH parts manual
https://app.box.com/shared/otkihx6yoa/1/24829736
Unfortunately some sections are incomplete. Also free to download.
I suggest reading the General Info 1st.

The carb is definitely a Holley if a 2bbl (either a 2300 or 2210),the exact model is dependent on engine and more info would be needed to look it up in the IH manual. Easier way is find the pn's on the unit and go from there.
If it's 392 it will be a 4bbl and either a Holley 4150 of Carter AFB.
Unless it's a 392 with a 2bbl, (Not OEM) no adapter plate is used OEM.

If you need more help IDing the carb. I have the info.

For posting questions on this truck please use the "1000 Series" section in the future.

WOW!

Thank you!!!

I'll do some digging tonight if I have time, if not tomorrow.

I picked this truck up for $500 and just want to get it running good so I can teach my kids how to drive a manual...

Re: 1974 IH 200

CSI, I took pictures of several truck VIN plates I have to give you an idea of what horsepower you might have have.A '68 V-304, a '71 V-345, and a '73 V-392. Hopefully, they'll give you an idea what engine you have. This is not as good as a line setting ticket, but might help until you get one. Bill

Re: 1974 IH 200

Looks like the middle one matches my motor... mine says 182hp and that one says 180...

Looked for a line ticket, nothing behind there.

Thanks for the help so far.

Another question, I went to get a new steering box this weekend. Guy say "is it standard or reverse" WTF? Any help there?

Re: 1974 IH 200

Your question is an example of why having the LST can be so useful. Take a look at the one I posted, The codes for steering begin with "05", on the above LST the steering code is 05282 and in the "description" column it says "S-282 Power Steering".
Looking in the MT-136 parts manual it just so happens that same steering was used in your truck series too. The last pg. of Group 5's index shows the code is for the Saginaw 708D steering gear (w/power). So if you have PS that's the steering gear you have,there was no other. If it's manual the book lists 2 possibilities,code 05055 Saginaw 525 or code 05165 Gemmer 378
With knowing what Str.Gr. you have should be all you need .

Google search of "Saginaw 708D steering gear"
https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=Sa ... ar&start=0
Seems to have been a widely used unit.

The question "is it standard or reverse" refers to the direction the gear rotates when the wheel is turned.
I'm not sure which is which (or just can't remember), but if you tell them which way the pitman arm moves when you turn the steering wheel they should be able to tell.
ie; when you turn the wheel to the right does the arm move toward the rear of the vehicle (counterclockwise) or toward the front (clockwise) ?
Let us know which it is, it's good to know info.
IIRC which rotation is used depends on if the gear is mounted on the inside or outside of the frame?

Did a search of "reverse rotation steering gear"
https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=re ... ar&start=0

Might give some insight on the subject?

Re: 1974 IH 200

Was going to try and save the old flatbed, just clean up the rails and such, but it was rotten.

Tore it off and starting over.

Not much new elsewhere. Replaced the spark plugs, but thats about it. Going to load it on the trailer and take it to my rental guy and use his hot water pressure washer to clean the motor and frame off.

Cab is going to get a new paint job, spray paint metallic blue...

Return to 1000 Series
