Re: battery

not knowing if truck has been altered look at thew wires going to coil, hot going to pos. ans wire from coil going to dist. neg side, negative ground.

hot going to neg side of coil, and pos side going to dist. then positive ground, coil is missing then you can look at back of amp gauge but that is more involved to figure what wire is what.

probably other ways too, I'm sure

Re: battery

What BRJ said is quick and easy to check. As long as it still has a generator and not an alternator it will not hurt to hook up either way with the engine not running, then turn on the lights and see which way the ammeter moves, if it moves toward the - side it is correct, if it move toward the + side it is reversed.
Whether it is positive or negitive ground makes no differance for anything on the truck execpt that the generator needs to know which way before it trys to charge the battery . This is accomplished by "polarizeing" the generator. To do this momentarly jump the A or Arm terminal to the B or Bat terminal on the REGULATOR with the battery hooked up and the engine off.and the ign coil works best the right way around
Some electric gauges care what polarity but not the thermal type used by IHC. Alternators care but not generators. Starters and blower and wiper motors with wound fields will not care, motors with permant magnet fields will turn backwards
