K and KB Steering Wheel Removal
The narrative of my ‘expertise’ is below: (editor’s note: I have added a couple of lines from the service manual to assist in the clarification here)
DISCLAIMER: I admit I do not know what I am doing, I only muddle around the yard with a crescent wrench in one hand and a hammer in the other. I am not an authoritative source (actually I am at the other end of the spectrum) on this or any other mechanical procedure. Of note: I have a Canadian built 1946 IHC KB-3.
With the above disclaimer in mind:
1: Remove the horn button by pressing on said button and turning counter clockwise.
2: Remove horn apparatus (I didn’t have this on mine so I don’t know how it comes off – If you can fill in the blanks feel free to do so)
From the manual:
(a) Disconnect horn wire at bottom of steering gear.
(b) Remove horn button by pressing down and turning to the right of left with palm of hand or vacuum cup SE-1172. Hold steering wheel stationary.
(c) Remove contact plates and spring.
(d) Take out the three screws holding the horn button retainer plate and remove this plate and horn wire.)
3. Remove the large nut inside the steering wheel and affixed to the shaft.
4. Loosen completely the clamp at the bottom end of the steering wheel sleeve where it joins the steering box.
5. With a rubber dead-blow hammer “gently” (but firmly) hit ‘around’ the base of the hub of the steering wheel. This should cause the steering wheel to slide up the splines and off the shaft.
6. Remove the spring under the steering wheel.
7. Tap around the top of the sleeve and remove the inner centering thingy (sorry to get so technical)
8. Slide the sleeve up and off the shaft.
9. I found the outer centering thingy in the sleeve does not want to come out of the sleeve. So as to keep it where it is supposed to be, I left it where it was.
Good luck,
George Bliss (not my real name if you break something)

I had no problem getting the steering wheel off but getting the steering box off the shaft is a complete mystery
The “centering thingy” is the remains of a bearing. Yours still has more than mine did.
You have to disassemble the steering box to get the shafts out of it.
If you have access to a parts catalog (MT-52D) A complete break down of the steering gear and shaft assembly is available in group 14-Steering. Figure 14-4.
